Hello and Welcome!

Please understand that this website is not affiliated with the Prince Matchabelli Company any way, it is only a reference page for collectors and those who have enjoyed the classic fragrances of days gone by.

The main objective of this website is to chronicle the history of the Prince Matchabelli fragrances and showcase the bottles and advertising used throughout the years.

However, one of the other goals of this website is to show the present owners of the Prince Matchabelli perfume company how much we miss the discontinued classics and hopefully, if they see that there is enough interest and demand, they will bring back these fragrances!

Please leave a comment below (for example: of why you liked the fragrance, describe the scent, time period or age you wore it, who gave it to you or what occasion, any specific memories, what it reminded you of, maybe a relative wore it, or you remembered seeing the bottle on their vanity table), who knows, perhaps someone from the current Prince Matchabelli brand might see it.

Also, this website is a labor of love, it is a work in progress and is always being updated with new information as I can find it, so check back often!

Cachet by Prince Matchabelli c1970

Launched in 1970, Cachet by Prince Matchabelli was a bold statement in the perfume industry, embodying sophistication and individuality. The choice of the name "Cachet" was a strategic one, reflecting the French word that denotes prestige, distinction, and a unique mark of approval. In this context, "Cachet" suggests an aura of exclusivity and refinement, qualities that Prince Matchabelli aimed to convey through this fragrance. The name evokes images of high status and elegance, positioning the perfume as a symbol of personal distinction.

The term "Cachet," rooted in French, implies a sense of authenticity and uniqueness. It brings to mind an elevated status and a mark of distinction, enhancing the fragrance’s allure. In the realm of perfume, "Cachet" would be interpreted as a scent that is not only luxurious but also tailored to enhance the wearer’s personal charm. The name suggests that the fragrance possesses an innate quality that complements and amplifies the individual characteristics of those who wear it.

In the context of the early 1970s, Cachet was introduced during a period marked by diverse and evolving trends in fragrance. The era was characterized by a fascination with bold, innovative scents that combined classic elements with new, daring combinations. Cachet’s classification as an animalic floral chypre fragrance was quite fitting for the time, reflecting a blend of traditional chypre notes with modern, sensual undertones. Its spicy aldehydic top notes, sultry woody floral heart, and warm, leathery mossy base aligned well with the prevailing tastes of the decade, which embraced both complexity and sensuality in perfumes.

The introductory advertisements for Cachet emphasized its unique ability to interact with the wearer’s body chemistry, claiming that it would enhance and play up each individual's special qualities. This marketing approach was designed to resonate with women seeking a fragrance that offered both freshness and a distinctive personal touch. By highlighting the perfume’s capacity to adapt to personal chemistry, Prince Matchabelli tapped into a desire for individuality and self-expression, making Cachet a compelling choice for women looking to assert their own unique style in the early 1970s.

Fragrance Composition:

So what does it smell like? It is classified as an animalic floral chypre fragrance for women. It starts off with a spicy aldehydic top, followed by a sultry woody floral heart, resting on a warm, leathery, mossy base. Sophisticated floral, slightly oriental, mossy.
  • Top notes: aldehydes, herbaceous note, spice note, and galbanum
  • Middle notes: patchouli, orris root, jasmine, East Indian vetiver and Oriental rose
  • Base notes: Abyssinian ambergris, oakmoss, leather, Tibetan musk, and Abyssinian civet

My bottle of Cachet cologne is vintage 1970s, very heavy with the oakmoss and vetiver. I dabbed a little on my wrist and well, it is not something I particularly like as I am not usually fond of chypres, my husband took a whiff of it on my arm and said it is a scent he "would buy for his mother" and not his wife.

Scent Profile:

Cachet, classified as an animalic floral chypre fragrance, unfolds with a compelling blend of notes that create a rich, multi-dimensional experience. The top notes are characterized by an invigorating burst of aldehydes, which impart a sparkling, soapy freshness that immediately captures attention. This is complemented by a herbaceous note, which adds a green, slightly bitter edge, and a spice note that introduces a warm, piquant complexity.

The introduction is further enriched by the resinous and slightly sweet aroma of galbanum, which lends a subtle, earthy green nuance to the initial impression.

As the fragrance evolves, it transitions into a sultry woody floral heart. Here, the lush, velvety scent of patchouli intertwines with the rich, powdery depth of orris root, creating a sophisticated and intriguing combination. Jasmine brings a touch of floral opulence, its heady and intoxicating aroma blending seamlessly with the exotic warmth of East Indian vetiver. Oriental rose adds a touch of romantic floral sweetness, enhancing the complexity of the heart with its rich, velvety texture.

The base notes of Cachet present a warm, leathery, and mossy foundation. Abyssinian ambergris imparts a deep, resinous warmth, its complex, slightly marine character providing a luxurious depth. Oakmoss contributes a classic chypre base with its earthy, woody facets, grounding the fragrance with its rich, mossy aroma.

The inclusion of leather adds a bold, animalic edge, while Tibetan musk brings a warm, sensual undertone that blends seamlessly with the earthy, slightly animalic scent of Abyssinian civet. This combination creates a lasting impression of sophistication and sensuality, anchoring Cachet as a complex and alluring fragrance.

The American Home, Volume 80, 1977:
"Cachet by Prince Matchabelli is a complex blend of florals with lingering notes that are ambery, mossy, woody, and musky. It's designed to smell totally different for each wearer."

Fate of the Fragrance:

Cachet, originally introduced in 1970, became a signature scent of its era with its distinctive blend of animalic floral chypre notes. However, the original formulation of Cachet was discontinued around 1990, marking the end of an influential chapter in its fragrance legacy. The perfume’s sophisticated blend of spicy aldehydes, sultry woods, and warm, mossy base notes had captivated many, but changing trends and evolving consumer preferences led to its phase-out.

In response to continued interest and demand, Cachet was reformulated and relaunched in 1995. This new version aimed to capture the essence of the original while adapting to contemporary tastes. Despite the reformulation’s efforts to revive the beloved scent, it too was eventually discontinued. The second iteration, though appreciated by some, could not fully recapture the original's magic or match the nostalgia associated with its initial launch. As a result, Cachet remains a cherished memory for those who experienced its unique blend of floral, woody, and animalic notes during its brief presence in the market.
  • Top notes: aldehydes, green grass, bergamot, spices and galbanum
  • Middle notes: patchouli, orris root, jasmine, vetiver and rose
  • Base notes: amber, sandalwood, leather, musk

Scent Profile:

Cachet opens with an invigorating burst of aldehydes, their crisp, soapy freshness immediately filling the air with a clean and modern vibrancy. The aldehydes are quickly joined by the verdant, slightly sweet scent of green grass, which brings a natural, dewy quality to the forefront. This fresh green note is complemented by the bright, citrusy sparkle of bergamot, adding a tangy lift.

A subtle blend of spices introduces a warm, intriguing complexity, hinting at the deeper layers to come. The galbanum, with its green, resinous character, enhances the overall freshness while contributing a hint of bitterness, setting the stage for the fragrance's evolving journey.

As the scent develops, the heart reveals a sophisticated blend of patchouli and orris root. The patchouli’s earthy, woody aroma imparts a sense of depth and richness, while the orris root adds a smooth, powdery elegance that softens the intensity of the patchouli.

Jasmine and rose intertwine in this floral heart, their lush, velvety scents offering a soft, romantic touch. Jasmine's intoxicating sweetness merges seamlessly with the rose’s classic, rich fragrance, creating a harmonious and inviting bouquet. The vetiver contributes an earthy, slightly smoky edge, grounding the floral notes and enhancing the composition's complexity.

In the base, amber envelops the scent in a warm, golden embrace, its sweet and resinous aroma providing a comforting, slightly balsamic finish. Sandalwood adds a creamy, woody facet, deepening the fragrance with its smooth, velvety texture. Leather introduces a sophisticated, slightly animalic edge, contributing to the overall richness and complexity.

Finally, a hint of musk lingers, adding a subtle, sensual warmth that perfectly rounds out the fragrance. Together, these base notes create a deeply resonant and lasting impression, leaving a trail of elegance and sophistication.

Regardless of whether you favor the original vintage Cachet or the 1990s reformulation, Cachet holds a special place in the hearts of those who grew up wearing it. For many, Cachet represents a cherished classic, a fragrance that evokes fond memories and timeless elegance. The original version, with its complex blend of aldehydes, spices, and earthy undertones, has a distinctive character that remains beloved by its devotees. Similarly, the reformulated version from the 1990s brought a fresh perspective while retaining the essence of the classic scent.

For those seeking to relive their memories or discover this iconic fragrance anew, Cachet can still be found online. Whether in its vintage form or the later iteration, Cachet continues to be a treasured choice for those who appreciate its sophisticated and enduring charm. The availability of Cachet on the secondary market ensures that this beloved perfume remains accessible to both longtime fans and new admirers alike.

    3. I wonder why they reformulated Cachet. It was a beloved scent. The new product is missing the “it” factor.

  3. What the heck is going on???? Has the Prince Matchabelli Family/corporation become Opportunists and decided to see how far they can exploit and dismiss the following of women in their past years of success! I have been wearing Cachet since the 70's and I am an active, attractive, beautiful woman of 61. This "drug store" cologne became mine, and my signature scent for years, with always compliments.I use to buy cachet as gifts for family, friends, nieces, etc. It is now unavailable at most stores...and is being advertised at purchase price at $99.00! if your corporate goal is to profit from this now, old, um I mean now "vintage" scent (yes, as a small business owner I understand) (profit) There is no reason to discontinue this fragrance....or did someone lose the recipe? Find it, bring it back or forget any more purchases.

I really wish you would bring it back as I cannot afford the ridiculous prices people are asking on Amazon, etc.

  6. This is the only perfume that I can ever remember my mom wearing. She is now 63 & on her last few drops of the last bottle she has from years ago. She has been using it sparingly since it became so hard to come by. The prices on Ebay/Amazon are just crazy (even for used). To me, this scent is my mom. Hope it comes back, I'd rather pay a little more to a store than the people trying to blow their prices up...because they can. :(

  7. Ditto the other comments. Cachet has been my cologne since 1970. I consistently receive compliments about this fragrance. I've tried other colognes and people know that they are not my scent. I've been searching online and finding ridiculous prices for those few bottles out there. For all of us who have been using cachet for over 40 years, please bring it back.

  9. Please prince matchabelli..bring back Cachet. I have been wearing this cologne for about 41 years I received a bottle as a birthday gift and haven't stopped wearing it until now. Why did you stop making a cologne that so many people enjoyed and are now totally disappointed and upset that it is no longer available. Just because something is old you just don't throw it out! I just hope when you get old someone doesn't decide to throw you out!! Please bring back cachet and make an bunch of upset 55 year Olds extremely happy and not feel like we were left out to pasture. Thanks

  12. I first wore Cachet in 1974 (age 14) because of my 16 yo friend. I thought it smelled better on her and her me, lol. I wore it til age 17 daily and used up every bottle ever owned. Bought it again in 1984. I bought it for nostalgia in 2014 and my 14 yo daughter took it from me and I bought a second bottle. I have searched for years since its discontinuation and just purchased a 1 oz. bottle in the classic shape on Ebay for $20. Glad to own it again! In 7th grade art class I sketched the bottle it in pencil for an A+ grade. No other fragrance held the place of Cachet, my first sophisticated Glamour magazine advertised fragrance first seen in 1970. Forever special and should be brought back for the first and new generations of devotees if deCoeur is smart.

  14. As a child ~ "sweet honesty", as a young lady ~ Cachet. And every time since. I believed it when it said matches my chemistry, why? Because I didn't smell like urine or bug spray when I use Cachet. People often noticed and complimented me on my perfume.
I smell like my deodorant now. Very said because I enjoyed how I felt when I put it on. I was special.

  15. Boyfriend troubles, teenage angst, dodgy 70s fashion and beautiful Cachet, I found some in Superdrug many many years ago and the memories it evoked sigh. Please please bring it back.

  16. Cachet was my very first perfume as a teenager. Wore it for many years til I could no longer find it. I don't like very many perfumes. I was so desperate to find it again I just ordered two bottles from one of these companies that say they can recreate any scent. I WAS SOOOO EXCITED! Well it just arrived today. Smells nothing like I remember and the strongest part of the scent, to me, smells like a freshly plowed field, or wet dirt. Now some people like those smells. I do not. Especially in my perfume. Now I AM SOOOO DISAPPOINTED. And yet, the prices people are asking for this stuff on EBay! I think they are smoking whatever the main ingredient is. I used to buy this at, I think, even Walgreens. But I have never had a lot of money so I know I never paid an exorbitant price for it. That is why I liked it...loved the fragrance and it was something I could afford. Please bring it back, at a reasonable price, and make it available to those of us that made it popular in the first place. I am a very young 67 now and on SSI but that doesn't mean I am old and don't care about the same things I always have. But it does mean I don't have the money for those ridiculous prices on EBay. Profit is one thing but greed is another. These people on EBay that ask 10 times or more the value of something...they can keep it. I have owned business before and I never did business that way. If you bring it back at a reasonable price, there are apparently a lot of us that would purchase it. Please consider it.
Why do companies always stake the best liked items off the market??

So yes in 2018 I still have vintage Catchet! Please bring Catchet back I used to spray it also on my pillow so I would sleep with Catchet. It's still my favorite perfume after all of these years.

  30. I am a 59 year old female who had worn Cachet since high school. It is the only perfume that I consistently got compliments on. I started seeing the deodorant spray and even got more and more compliments. One man in line st the grocery store said it should be ill-legal to smell that good. My husband laughed and said I told you. I bought it all I could get at the stores even PM stopped making it and bought all I could find on line. Now I am out. Please please please bring it back. It was my signature scent. Everyone loved they way I smelled. I always felt confident wearing Cachet. Since then I have lost my sense of smell and can't pick perfumes. I know Carney works for me. Again please please please bring Cachet back!!!!!!

  34. I have read lots of these comments and I find it quite incredible that, not only are they all saying pretty much the same thing, but they are expressing my feelings and experiences exactly. I was first introduced to Cachet when I was given some as a gift for my 21st birthday, back in 1973. I fell in love with it and have worn it ever since then until I could no longer find anywhere that was selling it. I have a small amount left that I will cherries because I am shocked at the prices on e-bay. As so many of the comments say, I was always complemented when I wore it, and again like so many others, it is the only perfume that I can wear that doesn’t irritate me so now I feel lost without it and would be over the moon if it was to return to the market at the reasonable price it always was. So, YES — Bring back Cachet BUT it would have to be EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE ORIGINAL.

Then they stopped making . I was so excited when It was rereleased in the 90's and I was so excited but it had been reformulated and it was just not the same ..I knew it was different immediately. My ex boyfriend and I had stayed friends and I wore it to surprise him at a reunion dinner . He did not even recognize the scent . I agree the scent should be back but ONLY as the original formula ..the remix was BIG FAIL... AND BELIEVE ME IF IT IS NOT THE ORIGINAL.. WE DIEHARDS WILL KNOW RIGHT AWAY !

The bottle glistened from afar, in the light, and as I walked over to it and took a wiff...I fell in love. The scent brought me into a glistening world with glittered sky’s and gold paths. Silvery and glistening gold flower petals entranced me into its scent. I fell in love with perfume for the very first time in my life and I have never faltered. I do hope to see it return in its original scent and exquisite design. Cachet is immortal. It will be remembered forever and ever because such beautiful scents and memories are unforgettable. If one thing is for sure is that it was loved in return, yet real love always comes back so, I hope to see it again.
